The Greek parliament has passed an emergency budget allowing delivery of loans from the International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank which should prevent the government on its debts within the next three weeks. Reuters have a report here with more detail. There is also a lot of coverage of the ongoing riots across Greece – from MSNBC.

The IMF/ECB loan agreement involves the Greek government guaranteeing to sell many national assets to the private sector and hence the ‘gifts to the Greeks’ image above.

Amid the concern over the future of the EU, the Euro and the so-called ‘European project’, another older Act of Union is also under strain and particularly so, since devolution. There’s a short explanation about how the original act between England and Scotland came about here.

Alex Salmond’s SNP is keen on a return to an independent Scotland and is in a strong position to attempt a referendum for this following a big win in the 2011 Scottish Assembly elections.

The Prime Minister tried to relaunch policy on the National Health Service yesterday. His speech was essential following the disastrous reaction of professional bodies and stakeholders in the state-funded service to Health Secretary Andrew Lansley’s initial proposals. This reaction was so negative and so strong, it necessitated an emergency ‘listening exercise’ pausing the legislative process. The PM has also felt the need to make three speeches on the proposals since early April. There is open betting on how long Andrew Lansley can stay in post.

Suspicions (Socialist Worker) about the government’s intentions were heightened by the activities of Mark Britnell – a recent member of David Cameron’s informal advisors on health, now at KPMG – who was reported making an incautious speech (Telegraph) about plans for the public service while at conference of venture capitalists in the United States.

Mr Britnell has been disowned – at least in public – by Mr Cameron. This drawing is extracted from a larger piece too.

One year after Chancellor Osborne’s emergency budget it is becoming clear that the national economy is still rather fragile and there is little sign of any recovery in economic activity. The Financial Times reports* on particularly depressing figures from the building and construction sector which is where signs of new economic activity tend to emerge.
