- 2014 was the year of Russell Brand – or, @RustyRockets in the popular culture
- And a sugar-fuelled ‘recovery’ in the economy
- The banks were still a sea of red, if you looked
- While #DigitalBritain struggled for life and reasonable working conditions
- Vladimir Putin put his hand back on bits of eastern Europe
- And surveillance technologies were a persistent concern for many
- Especially if you were in the middle of the conversations about them
- The Hillsborough Inquest, finally, finally looked as if it would reveal a fair picture of the Sheffield stadium disaster from 1989
- Monty Python was revived although Nigel Farage is yet to be squashed
- Sir Cyril Smith’s crimes against small boys and the law were re-exumed
- Even Cliff Richard was implicated in ths stories about #ElmGuestHouse
- The Americans and Chinese continued to buy up whichever parts of the UK the Govt could still sell
- Farage and UKIP boosted some old attitudes towards ‘others’ – this did not feel good or wise
- And speaking party politically, everything moved rightwards, including Labour and the hapless Mr Miliband
- Andy Coulson (Ex News Intl and PM’s Head of Comms) saw jailtime for phonehacking – he was barely in for longer than England lasted in the world cup
- The Child Abuse Inquiry was announced – and ran straight into trouble
- The 100 year anniversary of World War One provided light relief (#joke)
- Scotland narrowly failed to vote for independence from the UK (who could have blamed them?)
- Everyone was cross about this
- Conservative MP Brooks Newmark embarrased himself in paisley pyjamas as the next leader campaign hotted up inside the Conservative party
- Children in need had a lot of deeper meanings this year
- The Dad’s Army film revival followed Monty Python and UKIP
- Infact, a lot of the year did seem to be about remembrance – and less about the now
- Grooming the news, if you like
- And we all know what’s coming after next year’s election
A selection of political cartoons about the year of 2014 in the UK.
